New Tourism Entity Records Loss
MP for Tabaquite Dr Suruj Rambachan says that he has noted with concern the loss of $487,000 by the Tourism Busuness Development Limited for the six months ended June 30, 2017.
He said that it’s Chairman Mr Jerry Hospedales is not known for any major turnarounds and therefore is not surprised that the entity suffered a loss.
“ I will be writing to the relevant Parliamentary Committee to bring this entity before it to examine the source of the loss since small losses become big losses especially when one does not discern the existence of a strategic plan and marketing activities to deal with the development of tourism by attracting investors,” said Dr Rambachan.
Mr Hospedales and his Board and Management are engaged in semantics and a play on words but are deficient from the start. Tourism and its success is inextricably bound to the quality of service one encounters. Unfortunately and especially in Tobago the service standards are poor. I travelled over the last two weeks to and from London on British Airways. The aircraft unloaded and picked up The majority of its passengers in St Lucia.
We need to ask why are tourists not coming to TT, the ones who stay over and spend money. That is the question, said Mr Rambachan.
Mr Hospedales has in my view started a trend where millions will be racked up in losses and nothing will be achieved except some hearty lunches and overseas travel jaunts.
He asked Mr Hospedales to report to the country on the PPP program. How much gas been spent and what has been achieved, asks Dr Rambachan. In the meantime he is also asking the Finance and Tourism Ministers to indicate what targets have been set for the Tourism Business Development Company Limited and what has been achieved to date except a loss of taxpayers money.
