Official Opening of Talparo Bridge
The reconstruction of the Talparo Bridge was completed within eight months much the relief of the residents in the area. It is anticipated that this project will significantly enhance the traffic flow with the two lane culvert replacing the single lane wooden bridge. This will provide an improved access within the Talparo and Brazil Communities.
The existing bridge was a narrow single lane structure with a wooden deck, seated on I-beams and supported on reinforced concrete abutments.
The various elements of the bridge deteriorated to such an extent that the steel I-beams were severely rusted. Large cracks were clearly visible on the abutments and wing walls. In addition there was severe scouring to the underside of the abutments.
As a consequence, this bridge because of its dilapidated condition was programmed for reconstruction in the first phase of the Bridges Reconstruction Programme. These works commenced on 9th February, 2014 and was completed within 8 months, at which it was opened to traffic on 25th October, 2014
