Renewed Hope for Local Gov’t
I had given up hope for local government but the recent performance of the Ministry of Local Government and the Regional Corporations have given me second thoughts. I refer in particular to the recent garbage problems in La Puerta Diego martin where the goodly Minister, Dr Rambachan went on the field to have the matter corrected. What made me even more pleased was the fact that he was not afraid to chastise the Chairman of the Diego Martin Regional Corporation who is a member of his party. This shows courage and a determination to get the job done without fear or favour. For too long party affiliation was judged more important than the work on behalf of the people. This action on the part of the Minister must be commended.
The action of the Minister has given me hope since I have also noted that in the area where I live in Central Trinidad the Chaguanas Borough Corporation and the Couva Tabaquite Corporation have been making serious efforts to have a cleaner Chaguanas and Couva. I wish to note however that the Litter Wardens must be fearless in giving out more tickets to persons guilty of littering. I commend the Minister for making a serious effort to realize a more effective local government system.
