Suruj: Be creative in finding materials for roads repairs
MP for Tabaquite Dr Surujrattan Rambachan is urging both the Minister of Works and Infrastructure and the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to be creative in finding materials for the repairs of roads especially in rural communities.
He is suggesting that Regional corporations especially the Siparia and Couva Tabaquite Talparo Regional corporations be allowed to mine state lands where gravel and boulders as well as tractor cut material can be mined. There is a lot of red gravel available in the Erin area as well as yellow stone in the Guaracara area. Because of a lack of material the available equipment and manpower at the corporations are underutilized resulting in financial wastage including unproductive labor.
With respect to more refined material Dr Rambachan is suggesting that a materials swap against debts owed to the government by National quarries take place early in the new year. He has further suggested that inventories at both Petrotrin and Lake Asphalt be reviewed to see what materials are available for producing road surfacing material and that a similar swap takes place. Private plants can then be utilized to produce asphalt for the Ministry and the Regional Corporations.
The lack of finance should not necessarily be an impediment to acquiring materials. It requires instead imaginative thinking and creative management in the pooling of resources.
