WASA Schedule for DESAL Plant Maintenance

Media Release: Pt. Lisas Desalination Plant to Shut Down for Maintenance Works

Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (Desalcott), held a joint news conference today – Tuesday 3rd November, 2015 at Desalcott’s Pt. Lisas office, to announce the temporary shutdown of the Plant over a ten-day period, for maintenance work. The planned shutdown of the facility will take effect from 13th – 23rd November, 2015.

The Desalcott owned and operated desalination plant, provides 40 mgd (million gallons per day) to WASA, which is used to supply the Pt. Lisas Industrial Estate, as well as augment the supply to areas in Central and South Trinidad.

The planned shutdown will have a significant impact on WASA’s overall water supply position in Trinidad. As such, the Authority announced its water supply management plan for the period, which aims to minimize the impact on customers.

The plan entails the following elements:

Re-distribution of supply from the Caroni and Navet Water Treatment Plants

Implementation of temporary supply schedules

Ensure capacity storage at critical service reservoirs

Increased water trucking capacity

Special emphasis and arrangements to supply schools, health institutions, homes for aged and other special needs organisations
Accelerate response to leak repair

The Authority also announced that revised temporary schedules for affected areas in Central and South Trinidad, will be published in the press on Sunday 8th November 2015. It will also be available on WASA’s website: www.wasa.gov.tt and Facebook page: WASA Trinidad and Tobago from Monday 9th November 2015.

Customers are advised to maintain/establish a system of storage over the period of the shutdown and to also manage their water use efficiently by reducing consumption. This can be done by eliminating wasteful practices; repairing leaks and overflowing water tanks at home and in business places.
